“Between beauty of expression and power of expression there is a difference of function. The first aims at pleasing the senses, the second has a spiritual vitality which for me is more moving and goes deeper than the senses.” Henry Moore
Life Force (right-brain experience)
Our creative ability helps us create that which we want, but it has another aspect too. It feeds our inner satisfaction…our “soul”. No matter what is happening in our lives, if we allow ourselves the time to create, we bring forth endorphin’s so strong they can influence our health, well being, and energy. Studies have shown the more we allow our “creative spirit’ to enfold, the greater energy and passion we have for living our lives.
When we create our own work, we see that there are many ways to see things. As artists, we need to tap into what we see and how we want to express it, and not what we think others want to see from us. To be “really” good, we need to create for the sake of creating, not to please others, or to achieve specific results. We need to be more process oriented, instead of goal oriented. This is the part of creativity that leads to inner satisfaction.
Taking it All In (left -brain exercise)
If we are always goal oriented, we are not getting the benefit of raised endorphin levels, and most likely not tapping into the true “creative spirit” that we have. If we always worry about, is it right, will someone like this, is it sale-able, we compromise our creative ability, individuality, and uniqueness. We are not being true to who we are.
I had that experience this week. I found myself creating what I thought I had to, instead of what I wanted to. It became a left-brain exercise in technique, instead of a heartfelt, creative, right-brain experience.
Even those who are not “artistically creative” must come up with new ideas and insights to move ahead. Engaging in an artistic activity even as a viewer can produce endorphin’s which will foster more creative thinking. The feelings that art produce, can lead to creative breakthroughs in any area of our life. Art is good for us!
“All art, literature and music must be brought forth with your hearts blood. Art is your hearts blood.” Edward Munch
