“Entrenched Meanders” by Florida artist Carolyn A. Land

“DESIGN! A Lively Guide to Design Basics for Artists and Craftspeople” by Steven Aimone features the work of CA Land among a notable collection of talented artisans.

TEXTURE AS SUBJECT

Finally, just as with line and mark, texture can be elevated to subject-matter status. Carolyn Land’s Entrenched Meanders, below right, is jam packed with actual textures in shallow relief. She uses corrugated cardboard, string, and a wide range of commercial papers to build up a very rich surface. The composition centers on contrasts between activity and passivity and on a contrasting variety of texture, both actual and imaginary.

As seen in DESIGN! A Lively Guide to Design Basics for Artists and Craftspeople by Steven Aimone.
